Volumes are storage areas where an operating system stores data. In most cases volumes consist of a filesystem in a partition. However, a volume can for instance span several partitions, e.g. in a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks), or can be created by putting a filesystem directly on a disk (without partitioning the disk) or into a file, like an ISO image or an Apple Disk Image (.dmg).
