Shared folders are directories on one system that are made accessible to one or more other systems, usually for reading and writing. There are various technologies that implement this general principle, for instance SMB (Windows shares), NFS, WebDAV (HTTP). Technologies in hypervisors (e.g. VirtualBox or Hyper-V) that give VMs access to folders of the host system are also commonly grouped under this topic.
